Linwood Holton Community Chronicles
LHES: Volume 4, Issue 1 (April 12th - April 16th, 2021)
This month we celebrate...
Scottish American Heritage Month
Each April, Scottish-American Heritage Month highlights Scottish heritage and remembers the Scottish-Americans who have had an impact on U.S. society. With an impressive list of contributions to American culture, Scottish-Americans have a lot to celebrate. As early immigrants to the American colonies, the Scottish have made an indelible mark on American culture as inventors, artists, politicians, and more.
This month, we will share historical information on the contributions of Scotland to American History. Did you know, Grandfather Mountain in Western North Carolina is considered the "Home of America's grandest Highland Games". Here, thousands of people gather to celebrate their Scottish ancestry. They represent their families with tartan banners, dress in traditional attire (kilts), play bagpipes and participate in traditional Scottish games.

National Library Month: "Welcome to Your Library"
"By the mid-1950s, Americans were spending significant amounts of time listening to the radio, watching TV and playing musical instruments. Through concern that people were not reading enough, in 1954 a non-profit book committee was established by the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers. National Library Week was first sponsored in 1958, and the weeklong event was developed with the intent to motivate people to read as well as to support and show appreciation to their local libraries."
"The theme for National Library Week (April 4-10, 2021), “Welcome to Your Library,” promotes the idea that libraries extend far beyond the four walls of a building – and that everyone is welcome to use their services." School Library Month, also known as National School Library Media Month. It has been observed the month of April since 1985.
Have you checked out the RPS Book Mobile!! The schedule is posted later in the newsletter
Stress Awareness Month
HOW TO OBSERVE STRESS AWARENESS MONTH
Practice Meditation
One of the most effective ways to deal with stress is to learn how to silence the mind. Meditation is one of the most popular methods of achieving this quiet.
Keep America Beautiful Month
KEEP AMERICA BEAUTIFUL MONTH ACTIVITIES
Apply for a community grant
Get funding to revitalize public parks or cleanup initiatives. Work to ensure your locale has plenty of trash cans in pedestrian-heavy spaces, as this will greatly reduce littering issues. Grants also help to improve areas impacted by environmental or natural disasters that need the goodwill and attention from people like you.
National Garden Month
NATIONAL GARDEN MONTH ACTIVITIES
Stop and smell the roses
Visiting a local rose garden, or really any garden in general, can be a great, cheap date or just a fun way to celebrate National Garden Month. Pack a picnic and have a fun lunch after a romantic stroll amongst the flowers, or get your knowledge on by visiting a nearby nature conservatory.

Introducing our newly voted 2021-2022 Teacher of the Year
Ms. Kristin Tam
This has been my hardest teaching year out of my 11 years of experience. Many times this year I felt that I was failing as a teacher and a parent. I am humbled to be chosen as the 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year. I could have never gotten through this year without all the support from teachers, friends, parents and most of all my most amazing students!

The Five Finger Rule for Book Selection
In order to determine if your child knows most of the words in a book, turn to a page in the middle of the book. As your child reads, hold up a finger for every word they don't know. Use the guidelines below.
*IMPORTANT NOTE*
If there are too many words your child doesn’t know in the book, they may become frustrated. Choose another book to find a better fit.
